Diablo III to feature “Global Play”. Kind of.

7 May 2012

Blizzard has confirmed that when it ships out next week, Diablo III will no longer restrict players to a single realm server. If you’re wondering “Is there some sort of catch?”, then Blizzard can also confirm that, yes, there is.

The game will be supported by servers in America, Asia, and Europe, and players will be able to move between servers and play with people in other regions. But

You’ll have to play different characters in each region, and gear can’t be shared between them. This is because import duties on prismatic axes and skill runes are currently at an all-time high.

Actually, I made that bit up – Blizzard didn’t give any reason for the decision, and probably won’t because it makes no sense whatsoever.

Bizarrely, you’ll apparently also have to recreate your friend list in each region, while Auction House purchases for real cash can only be made in your home region.

Maybe it’s better to just stay in one place, huh?

All of you commenting on how “it makes no sense” obviously don’t understand the logistics behind what would need to happen for characters to be available cross realm… Please don’t comment on what you don’t understand.
