Minecraft hits 6 million sold copies

Global phenomenon Minecraft has continued to prove that people never really get tired of blocks – which would explain why Lego is still so popular.

Notch announced on Twitter yesterday that his game has now sold a staggering six million copies, another big milestone for the developer. According to the site, at time of writing, Minecraft has sold 6,001,992 copies with 29,894,214 registered to the site.

This could have something to do with the Xbox release, which seems to have given the sales output a significant boost. Daniel Kaplan, of Minecraft studio Mojang, estimates that in total 9.2 million copies have been moved.

A lot of the game’s success can be attributed to the continued support by its developer, consistently adding new features and content. Mojang is still working on their upcoming game Cobalt, while Minecraft continues to sell. According to the Financial Times, Mojang made $13.5 million in their first fifteen months. Not bad for an indie, is it?
