The Activision vs Infinity Ward saga continues, with pre-trial hearings currently taking place. The trial is bringing all new information to light, such as the fact that Infinity Ward has received $493 million from Activision – allegedly still not as much as was stipulated by the contracts.
These various bonuses were reportedly differentiated into three different categories. Studio, games developed by Infinity Ward; Tech, games which used Infinity Ward-developed technology licensed by Activision; and IP, any game using the Call of Duty brand. The bonuses paid out thus far break down as follows: $354.66 million to studio, $62.56 million to tech and $75.64 million to IP. The developers argue that Activision owe them for Black Ops and Modern Warfare 3, while Activision disagrees.
The lawsuit is a result of Infinity Ward lead developers West and Zampella being fired by Activision in 2010 for “breach of contract”. The pair then sued Activision for wrongful termination, alleging that the publisher had fired them to avoid paying hefty bonuses. Activision countersued, and here we are.
Pre-trial hearings will carry on this week, and the case is due to begin on the 1st of June.
