Epic Games wins legal battle against Silicon Knights

31 May 2012

About a hundred years later, the legal war between Epic Games and Silicon Knights has finally ended, and Epic Games won. They won so hard, in fact, that Silicon Knights has to pay them $4.45 million in damages.

The Canadian studio originally filed a case against Epic for technical support problems with the Unreal Engine 3 during development of Too Human, seeking $58 million for their trouble. Silicon Knights later had to rebuild the game using a proprietary engine, but Epic counter-sued, claiming the company had used Unreal Engine tech in their new engine.

The court sided with Epic, and ruled that Silicon Knights had breached the Unreal Engine licence agreement.

“Case over. Jury finds for Epic on all counts,” Epic boss Mark Rein told followers on Twitter.

While Epic’s win might come as a nasty shock to Silicon Knights, they were never going to get much out of it if they’d won. A judge recently suggested that, in the event of Silicon Knights winning the case, the damages awarded would amount to a single dollar on each count.
