Sony Online Entertainment unveils facial tracking for Everquest 2

Sony Online Entertainment has announced a snazzy new gimmick for fantasy MMO Everquest 2, designed to make the game more immersive.

The game will make use of revolutionary motion tracking software called SOEmote, created by Image Metrics, a UK-based animation company. The software will use your webcam to map your facial movements and reflect them on your in-game character.

Not only that, if you’re using the integrated voice chat it will also add a filter to your voice, causing you to sound to other players like the character you play.  This means that if you play a particularly ugly ogre, you will not only sound like one to your friends, but when you smile, so will he. Creepy stuff.

We don’t know when exactly it will be going live, but as with everything this weekend, expect more details at E3.  For now, check out the video for the most excited game developer ever:
