Peter Molyneux’s new game features a single £50,000 DLC item

8 June 2012

Remember Peter Molyneux’s big plan to release a series of “experiments” ahead of his new studio’s first proper game? The first one is out, and it’s very… experimental.

The not-a-game-but-an-experiment is called Curiosity and, basically, there’s a huge black cube, and players must chip away at it using chisels. The first player to crack the thing open will be granted an exclusive look at something “truly amazing, absolutely unique”.

At some point, however, additional chisels will be released as DLC, including a single, £50,000 diamond chisel. Seriously, £50,000. That’s, like, more than half a million local bucks, or – as the ‘Neux himself put it – “an insane amount of money.”

What’s the point?

“This is not a money-making exercise. It is a test about the psychology of monetisation,” Molyneux told New Scientist. What happens when a one-of-a-kind item is offered, with the promise of something “truly amazing” and “absolutely unique”? Let’s wait and see, but [SPOILERS] probably nothing.
