The legendary Nintendo game designer and producer Shigeru Miyamoto, known for creating some of the greatest franchises including Mario, Donkey Kong, and Zelda, is looking to expand his repertoire in the shooter market.
In a recent interview, the video game veteran expressed his interest in the first-person shooter genre, but claims that he has not had time to approach his genre-jumping ambition.
“I actually do kind of want to make a first-person shooter,” Miyamoto told Kotaku, “but I don’t have time.”
The game wouldn’t be a traditional run-and-gun though, as Miyamoto also mentioned how the game would have an emphasis on the environment and exploration.
“Rather than necessarily the question of ‘What kind of weapon do I have?’ in a first person shooter or ‘What kind of effect does that have on an enemy?’, I think that the structure of a first-person shooter is something that’s very interesting,” he said. “Having that 3D space that in theory you are in and being able to look around and explore that — particularly being able to do that in conjunction with another person — is very interesting.”
Seeing the Wii U in action, with the likes of ZombiU, one can see the potential and gameplay opportunities in terms of first-person shooters on the system, and Miyamoto agrees.
“Well, if you’re playing a first-person shooter and you have the game up on the television screen and you have your subscreen below [in the GamePad controller], within that game world you’re able to turn in all directions around you.”
He also added that the dual-screens would benefit the FPS genre and will “create a very fun and unique gameplay experience.”
So, looks like we may be seeing Ultimate Goomba Shooter after all.
