Dead Space 3 needs to appeal to a wider audience

16 June 2012

While big, blockbuster games like the Call of Duty franchise can put up big sales numbers, these games also require an enormous capital investment. These are the challenges faced by EA in the development of Dead Space 3, as it needs to appeal to the widest possible audience.

“In general, we’re thinking about how we make this a more broadly appealing franchise, because ultimately you need to get to audience sizes of around five million to really continue to invest in an IP like Dead Space,” said EA president Frank Gibeau in a recent interview.

“Anything less than that and it becomes quite difficult financially given how expensive it is to make games and market them.”

Dead Space 2 sales numbers aren’t available, although EA have said that the sequel sold about twice as many copies as its predecessor – a good sign for the series.

However, EA is obviously concerned about making sure the third game in the series brings in more than the die-hard fans, and would appear to be shifting to a more action-oriented focus. The game is currently set for a 2013 release.
