Strauss Zelnick, boss of the publisher behind Grand Theft Auto Take-Two, has his doubts about the Wii U being able to deliver to “core” gamers.
Zelnick said Take Two will be offering various sports and casual titles on the platform, but doesn’t currently have any intention of having their core franchises cross over, saying that he is “sceptical”.
He might be a little down on the Wii U, but he’s still enthusiastic about the opportunities provided by other next-gen hardware.
“For a company like ours, it’s a great opportunity. [New console launches] separate the winners from the losers – and we fully expect to be one of the winners,” he said.
Zelnick doesn’t elaborate on why exactly he’s sceptical of the Wii U’s ability to attract a core audience, although he’s not the first person in the industry to do so.
Zelnick also teased at a possible new IP launching on the new hardware: “I don’t want to minimise the challenge of creating titles for new technology or the economic challenges of doing that, but if you get it right, it’s a terrific time to launch a new IP.”
While Take-Two isn’t buying into Wii U for their core titles just yet, a handful of third party publishers have confirmed core titles to be supported on the Wii U; these are: Ubisoft (Assassin’s Creed 3), Sega (Aliens: Colonial Marines), THQ (Darksiders 2) and Namco Bandai (Tekken Tag Tournament 2).

Nintendo has the most successful current-gen console. The new console will allow all the current Wii players to play their old games on the new consoles. Compare that to the likes of Sony (remind me about their financials again?) and Microsoft who expect you to trash your old games and buy everything from scratch again at R700 a pop.
