Doom 3 BFG Edition gets a release date and pricing

19 June 2012

Doom 3’s resurrection into the modern day HD gaming scene has been slapped with a release date.

The special Doom 3 re-release package will arrive in North America on 16 October 2012 and Europe on 19 October 2012, assuming that South African’s will get hold of the space-horror the same day as our European counterparts.

The game will cost $29.99 (about R250.00) for PC, and $39.99 (about R330.00) for the Xbox 360 and PS3 version.

The Doom 3 BFG Edition features Doom 3 and the Resurrection of Evil add-on pack, both of which have been revamped for Xbox 360 and PS3. The package also includes “hours” of new content – seven new levels titled “The Lost Mission”. And just in case that isn’t enough Doom for you, the originals of the legendary FPS franchise are also squeezed into the package – Doom and Doom 2.

Doom 3, Resurrection of Evil, and “The Lost Mission” have been given the modern day 3D gaming treatment, which sounds pretty cool. It also boasts 5.1 surround sound, Xbox 360 Achievements, PlayStation 3 trophies, improved rendering and lighting, and a new check point save system to make up for the lack of a quick-save button on console controllers.

id Software has apparently fine-tuned the controls for console gamers, and Doom 3 now features the new armour-mounted flash-light, allowing players to illuminate dark corners and blast enemies at the same time. Revolutionary!

“Doom 3 was enthusiastically embraced by gamers worldwide at its release,” said John Carmack, Technical Director at id Software. “Today, the full experience has been enhanced and extended to be better than ever, and is delivered across all the platforms with a silky smooth frame rate and highly responsive controls. New support for 3D TVs, monitors, and head mounted displays also allows players to experience the game with more depth than ever before. We think shooter fans everywhere will love it.”

Ill just play my old copy of Doom 3. Don’t see how an HD version of the game will make the pitch black rooms look any better. Oh damn … the last few games I bought really turned me into a pessimist.
