Epic Games reveals their most profitable game ever

27 June 2012

After more than twenty years in the business, Epic Games has a pretty big catalogue of megahits on the company résumé, perhaps most prominently the Unreal, Unreal Tournament, and Gears of War series. But you’d probably never guess which game has made them the most cash.

Launched just two years ago, the $5.99 iOS game Infinity Blade has already grossed over $23 million for the studio.”The most profitable game we’ve ever made, in terms of man years invested versus revenue, is actually Infinity Blade,” Epic boss Tim Sweeny revealed to attendees at the Game Developers Conference in Taipei this morning.

“It’s more profitable than Gears of War.”

The sequel, released in December last year, made more than $5 million in its first month on the App Store. To date, the franchise has banked more than $30 million. So much for “casual” gaming, huh?

“The game industry is the most exciting one on earth,” he added. “We’ve seen unprecedented change, just in our lifetimes. It’s an unprecedented amount of change, and also opportunity.”
