Meet the Pyro – the final Team Fortress 2 character spotlight

27 June 2012

Valve started their “Meet the Team” marketing campaign for Team Fortress 2 back in 2007, and things have been quiet since “Meet the Medic” was released roughly a year ago. All that remained was the most enigmatic TF2 member – the Pyro.

“Meet the Pyro” has finally been released in all its flaming glory. Valve unmasks the Pyro (metaphorically speaking) and gives us a glimpse into the dark, twisted psyche of the maniac.

Will they dare settle the “boy or girl” debate? You’ll have to watch the video to find out.

“Meet the Pyro” also marks the public launch of The Source Filmmaker (SFM), which is the movie-making tool built and used by Valve to make movies inside the Source game engine.

The SFM uses the same assets as the game, so anything that exists in the game can be used in the movie, and vice versa. This is an interesting point, as Valve has previously announced their association with Shane Acker, who directed the 2009 animated movie “9”. Brown Bag Films and Valve are cooperatively developing a new film called Deep, which will use the Source Engine to power the animation.

As Valve explains it, “By utilizing the hardware rendering power of a modern gaming PC, the SFM allows storytellers to work in a what-you-see-is-what-you-get environment so they can iterate in the context of what it will feel like for the final audience.”

Those interested in creating movies and games in parallel can sign up for an SFM beta key and start shooting on location inside the world of TF2. Head on over to the Source Filmmaker website to sign up.
