Remember those rumours just before E3 about Sony announcing a major cloud-gaming service acquisition? Almost totally true, even though they didn’t actually announce it at E3 as it was supposed to happen. Only half points to the internet.
The deal was reportedly closed over the weekend, with a $380 million cheque passing hands between Sony and Gaikai.
According to the press stuff, the acquisition will allow for content to be streamed to “a variety of internet-connected devices”, which could also include non-PlayStation devices, making this potentially a big opportunity for the company to expand its market.
“By combining Gaikai’s resources including its technological strength and engineering talent with SCE’s extensive game platform knowledge and experience, SCE will provide users with unparalleled cloud entertainment experiences,” said SCE president Andrew House.
“SCE will deliver a world-class cloud-streaming service that allows users to instantly enjoy a broad array of content ranging from immersive core games with rich graphics to casual content anytime, anywhere on a variety of internet-connected devices.”
“We expect this will be incredible news for all our partners as we will be able to unlock AAA console gaming from the cloud, with the full support of Sony,” added Gaikai boss David Perry.
