New PS3 model in the works

6 July 2012

The Sony PlayStation 3 will be six years old in November, and maybe it’s time for a maaaAAAAaaaaakeover. Sony seems to think so, anyway, according to a bunch of Federal Communications Commission documents leaked over on NeoGAF.

The paperwork puts the new PS3 model number at CECH-4001X, ahead of the current 3000 series of consoles. No information about internal specifications is included, although the FCC label has moved position on the console, suggesting a form factor change of some kind.

Somewhat more speculatively, a recent system update apparently changed the “Eject disc” command to “Remove disc”, possibly pointing to a top-loader unit, much like the final PSOne and PS2 console revisions.

The FCC filing also asks for a 180-day confidentiality period so Sony can keep things secret, claiming that public disclosure “might be harmful to our company and would give competitor an unfair advantage in the market.” That totally worked out.
