Activision to release Walking Dead FPS

Games tend to develop genre clumps, whereby one or two games’ success predicates a multitude of games in that same genre. There’s no doubt that zombie games are the latest trend, capturing the attention of nerds across the globe who love nothing more than to discuss how best to handle a zombie apocalypse.

Activision plans to cut a healthy slice of the zombie pie, adding in the added marketability of the Walking Dead television series. Activision plans to take AMC’s hit show and turn it into an FPS, with the developer of Ghostbusters, Terminal Reality, creating the game.

Instead of the emotionless, wooden protagonist from the series, players will take the role of wild hillbilly Daryl Dixon and his vulgar brother Merle, who will set on a “haunting, unforgiving quest to make their way to the supposed safety of Atlanta.”

Much like the television series, the game will switch between action and stealth, and players will often be asked to avoid detection rather than gun down a shambling horde of the undead. For the most die-hard of zombie apocalypse theorists, resource management will be a very real part of gameplay, and you’ll have to interact with NPCs who may help or hurt you, depending on the decisions you make.

It sounds like it will have a little more depth than your average Left 4 Dead style game, let’s just hope zombies make more of an appearance than they do in the TV show. There’s not much in the way of a release date, but the game should be hitting shelves “sometime next year”.
