Molyneux’s new indie game gets date and details

7 July 2012

Peter Molyneux has established some of the biggest names in game development history, such as Bullfrog and Lionhead studios. He recently left Microsoft in order to start his own indie studio, 22 Cans.

Now the industry stalwart has given more details on his first game since leaving Microsoft – Curiosity.

If you haven’t heard of it before, the game’s entire premise seems to be based on its title – players will have small pickaxes which they will use to chip away at an immense black cube, made up of 60 million other cubes. What’s in the center of it? You’ll have to wait to get there to find out.

The destruction of the cube will be a team effort – Molyneux claims the game allows for up to a million players chipping away at the block at the same time. There isn’t much more info on what actually happens in the game aside from manual labour.

Molyneux however, always with a flair for drama, says the center of the cube “is so valuable and so life-changingly important”.

He got even more enthusiastic, “It’s so amazing I think it will appear on news reports, though it’s not a dead cat, by the way.” If it’s a cat that’s neither alive nor dead, I’m going to flip the table.

Perhaps most interestingly, despite up to a million people being able to put in some hard time, only one person will actually be able to “unlock the mystery” at the center of the cube. How this person is chosen or why there can only be one has not been revealed.

Additional tools will be sold via microtransactions, and in true Molyneux style there will be a diamond pickaxe on sale for $50,000, although Molyneux insists this is “nothing to be ashamed of.”

The premise is intriguing, but after all the hype and hard work it’s going to be really hard for the conclusion to not be disappointing. We’ll get to begin uncovering the secret on August 22nd of this year, when the game will be released on iOS, Android and PC.

I have not played minecraft but this sounds kinda like minecraft…perhaps he should stop trying to do something mind boggling and just do what he did when created Syndicate and Dungeon Keeper….design a normal game that was extraordinary.
