Torchlight II still in development because making games is a lot of work

Diablo III was famously in development for over seven thousand years until it finally launched in May, and Runic Games’ Torchlight II was supposed to be out before it. But making games is maybe more work than gamers might imagine, and that’s why Torchlight has been delayed so many times already.

In a post over on the official Runic Games forums, boss Travis Baldree explained the what and why of Torchlight II’s long development, although it mostly comes down to “because actually it’s a lot of work, people”.

“Many folks are anxious to see the game released – many have preordered, and want a date! We’ve been deliberately vague on this point,” he wrote. “My hope is that if I give you an idea of what we’re doing, what it takes to do it, and the scale of it, it will make it apparent why that is.”

He went on to detail a whole lot of specific changes to the game made as a result of the beta in May, which should hopefully help the whiners realise that there’s more to developing games than plugging in some art assets and dialogue and pressing a big red COMPILE button.

“Anyway, I’ll try to continue to post on a more-or-less weekly basis until this ships to give you something to chew on, so that you won’t have the impression that we’re all twiddling our thumbs behind our desks – we really aren’t,” Baldree concluded. “Nor are we feverishly polishing the doorknobs while the house is yet to be built. We tie things up and we move on, and we do it over and over again until we get to the end.”

The game is still expected to launch sometime this year, or at least until it’s delayed again.
