Final Fantasy Versus XIII cancelled, claim insiders

I wasn’t going to write this one up because I’m not exactly MyGaming HQ’s JRPG expert, but Quinton is such a mess now that it’s been passed on to me. Apparently he’s crawled under the Nespresso machine and is refusing to come out until somebody brings him his Sephiroth plushie and a tub of double-chocolate Häagen-Dazs.

Anyway.

According to Kotaku’s industry spies, Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been cancelled, news that perhaps may not be that unexpected when the developers have consistently avoided saying anything about the game for ages already. No reason has been supplied for the project’s cancellation, but Square Enix has allegedly been keeping the whole thing on the down-low because an official announcement would impact their stock prices and make Final Fantasy fans hate them.

According to Kotaku’s other industry spies, Final Fantasy Versus XIII’s assets and resources were incorporated into another Final Fantasy game altogether several months back, although this was prior to the game’s cancellation and may or may not be relevant now.

Square Enix will reportedly be talking about “new developments” for Final Fantasy at the series’ 25th anniversary event in Shibuya, Tokyo on 1 September with a stage titled “Final Fantasy XIII Lightning Saga: New Developments Presentation.”
