Market research company Gfk has released its June 2012 sales stats for the SA physical retail gaming market. Diablo III is the only game with the sheer force of evil necessary to keep The Sims 3: Showtime Katy Perry Collection from taking the number 1 spot.
With a relatively quiet release schedule in June, a few big name titles did the shuffle on the sales chart.
On PC it’s a tale of threes, with Max Payne 3 (June 1) sneaking in at number 5. Battlefield 3 is still a strong seller, perhaps bolstered by the recent release of some new DLC. The Sims 3 expansions and Diablo III top off the list.
On Xbox 360, Max Payne 3 lost its May number 2 spot to strong classics (15 May), and the late May release of Ghost Recon: The less-than-stellar Kinect Star Wars is hanging in there, having slipped from number 1 in May, down to 5.
On PS3, FIFA 12 managed to knock Gran Turismo 5 from its domination of number 1, with sales possibly spurred on by the recent European Champions League football spectacular.
It is interesting to note the sales performance of Max Payne 3, as publisher Take-Two was recently lamenting that the game simply didn’t sell enough copies to make targets. Their other notable release, the impressive Spec Ops: The Line doesn ‘t even feature on the SA top 5 sales charts.
