Ahead of tomorrow’s expected retraction and apology, Gearbox lead designer John Hemingway has revealed the Borderlands 2 Mechromancer’s so-called “girlfriend mode”, for girlfriends who obviously suck at games because they’re girls and girls suck at games.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Hemingway explained that, “The design team was looking at the concept art and thought, you know what, this is actually the cutest character we’ve ever had. I want to make, for the lack of a better term, the girlfriend skill tree. This is, I love Borderlands and I want to share it with someone, but they suck at first-person shooters. Can we make a skill tree that actually allows them to understand the game and to play the game? That’s what our attempt with the Best Friends Forever skill tree is.”
For example, one of the first available skills makes bullets ricochet off nearby objects and into targets, precluding all that really hard stuff like aiming a reticule.
“Can’t aim? That’s not a problem,” Hemingway said, because, you know, girlfriends can’t aim.
There’s nothing wrong with having some difficulty learning how to play first-person shooters, of course, but the thing is, that applies to just about everybody who’s ever played one. Then again, this is coming from the same people who thought Duke Nukem’s Capture the Babe mode was a clever idea, so maybe I’m not altogether surprised. Ha, ha, sexism is so hilarious.
