Some South African ISPs are still charging well-over R50 per GB for standard consumer ADSL products, and if you are gaming by the gigabyte, choosing the wrong provider can hurt your pocket.
EDSL, for example, charges R 49.99 for a 1GB shaped ADSL account, and R84.99 for an unshaped 1GB data bundle. Vanilla is also charging R49 per GB for shaped ADSL data, and R87 per GB for unshaped data.
Southern Star Computers charges R59 for a 1GB shaped ADSL account, and the price increases to R99 per month for a 1GB unshaped account. Wandata Internet Solutions also charges R59 for a 1GB ADSL account.
Vodacom is charging R69 for a 1GB data bundle (R69 per GB), and R169 for a 3GB data bundle (R56 per GB).
Telkom’s price of R79 for a 1GB AllAccess ADSL account is also one of the highest rates in the country, but it should be noted that the company is also offering a 5GB account at R99 (R19.80 per GB) and a 10GB account at R149 (R14.90 per GB).
It should be noted that we only looked at consumer ADSL services for this comparison, and not high-availability and high-bandwidth business services (where the cost can be far higher than consumer services).
