Ironclad Games and Stardock – the developer and publisher respectively of Sins of a Solar Empire – are being sued by Sniper Elite developer Rebellion Developments over the name of the game’s latest expansion, also Rebellion. Because, you know, it’s all so confusing and stuff when two totally different things have the same name.
The lawsuit alleges that both Ironclad and Stardock have infringed on Rebellion’s (the developer) trademark “to the damage and detriment” of the company with the Rebellion (the expansion) launch.
Among other claims, that includes misleading buyers into believing that Rebellion (the developer) made Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion (the expansion) by using a big capital letter font for the word “REBELLION” (just the word) on the box art and using the word “rebellion” (just the word again) to describe Rebellion (the expansion again).
Rebellion (the developer) is pushing for an injunction against sales of Rebellion (the expansion), as well as an unspecified amount for compensatory damages because Rebellion (the developer) has been “deprived of substantial sales” as a result of Rebellion (the expansion).
Next, the US military sues Rebellion for releasing a game called “Sniper Elite”, which could be easily mistaken for real snipers.
