Black Isle Studios is back

Publisher Interplay seems to be resurrecting their Blask Isle Studios development brand, having shut down the original studio back in 2003. The original team members have obviously since moved on, so this is an interesting move by the troubled publisher.

“Our goal has always been to make the world’s best RPGs. Black Isle Studios is back,” reads a message over on the bare-bones BlackIsle.com.

There is also a Facebook page and a Twitter account listed, both with precious little information about the reason for this resurrection.

The original Black Isle Studios is legendary among PC RPG gamers of the late 90’s and early 2000’s for developing franchises such as Fallout, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment, and for publishing the Baldur’s Gate series.In December 2003, Interplay laid off the entire staff of Balck ISle, as the publisher was suffering from serious financial difficulties.

In fact, Interplay is still struggling to this day, and their only notable impact on the gaming world of late has been losing a legal battle to Bethesda regarding a Fallout MMO.

Perhaps Interplay is making one last gamble at putting out a smash-hit RPG? Watch this space.
