The legal battle which has raged between Apple and Samsung over smartphone patents has finally come to a conclusion; and it would appear Apple is the victor.
The San Jose jury has come back with a verdict in the patent dispute, ruling that Samsung has infringed on 5 of Apple’s patents, and are being asked to pay an enormous $1 billion in damages to the iPhone maker.
The full list of rulings is a long one, and is still being read, but at this time Apple has not been found to have infringed on any of Samsung’s patents, and Samsung have not been awarded any damages.
Where this goes from here is still uncertain. Samsung do have the option to appeal, but the judge has been urging that the two companies reach a cross-licensing agreement. Elsewhere in the world court battles between the two companies wage on; Apple and Samsung both lost a split decision in South Korea yesterday. The two mobile phone giants have served each other with more than 50 lawsuits, across 10 countries.
This could impact the Android market, with devices perhaps increasing in price if Samsung do pay the enormous damages claim, or significant design changes may have to be made on future mobiles. With the iPhone already dominating the mobile market, this could solidify Apple’s position even more.

I read the summaries from Groklaw… its kind alike Samsung hand one hand tied behind their back. The judge won’t allow them to use a lot of examples to prove that Apple just re-invents stuff. But I suspect that Samsung will appeal and that this time around they will win. Apple said in a memo that they were glad that there were no tech savvy people in the jury… Wow! Seriously?!?!?! So the jury was filled with BlackBerry users.
