A South African roll-out of iTunes is in the works and users may be able to get music from Apple’s digital storefront using a South African iTunes account as soon as next month.
This is according to Yoel Kenan, founder and CEO of Africori, a licensing platform for African music.
In his 20-odd years in the music industry, Kenan has headed up MP3.com Europe, and worked for companies like Universal and Sony BMG.
Kenan said that he is not involved with iTunes, though they do aggregate music content to Apple’s popular music service.
According to Kenan, he heard about the South African plans for iTunes from an internal source.
Asked about the launch of iTunes in SA, Core Group, local distributor for Apple products, said:
There has been no announcement from Apple and we have no further information.
Queried directly, Apple said that it does not comment on rumours or speculation.
