Not many games manage to be both educational and entertaining, but Nicholas Cannasse’s EvoLand is both of these things plus more nostalgia than a whole box of triple-ply code wheels.
It’s a Zelda-style adventure that starts off with low-resolution monochrome graphics and simple horizontal movement, and increases in visual and gameplay complexity as you go on.
Just like a real childhood, especially if your own included a Golden China console.
The game was created as part of the annual Ludum Dare competition, which challenges entrants to develop a game in just 48 hours.
You can play it right now for free in your browser, and don’t give up just because of the choppy scrolling near the start. That’s part of video game history too, remember. It gets better.
