Project Eternity details revealed by Obsidian Entertainment

14 September 2012

Obsidian Entertainment has launched a Kickstarter project for their next RPG game, currently codenamed Project Eternity.

The game will be an isometric party-based RPG set in a new fantasy world, with gameplay in the vein of PC RPG classics Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment.

Obsidian Entertainment boasts legendary game designers Chris Avellone (Fallout 2, Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights, Alpha Protocol, Fallout: New Vegas), Tim Cain (Fallout, Fallout 2, Arcanum) and Josh Sawyer (Icewind dale, Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Alpha Protocol).

I expect that CRPG fans circa the late 90’s, early 2000’s will agree that this sounds like a perfect game development storm.

“Project Eternity aims to recapture the magic, imagination, depth, and nostalgia of classic RPGs that we enjoyed making – and playing. At Obsidian, we have the people responsible for many of those classic games and we want to bring those games back… and that’s why we’re here – we need your help to make it a reality!” proclaims Obsidian on their Kickstarter page.

“Project Eternity will take the central hero, memorable companions and the epic exploration of Baldur’s Gate, add in the fun, intense combat and dungeon diving of Icewind Dale, and tie it all together with the emotional writing and mature thematic exploration of Planescape: Torment.”

Having just launched today (14 September 2012) and requiring US$1.1 million to make this a reality, Obsidian Entertainment has already hit the US$355,000 mark at the time of writing. At this rate, they should cruise to their required donations within a few days.

There are multiple levels of donation available, with goodies at each tier. If you are in any way a fan of CRPG games of yore, then check out this Kickstarter project.
