Slimmer and lighter Playstation 3 revealed

19 September 2012

At the Tokyo Game Show 2012 press conference, Sony finally revealed its new slimmer PS3 model, which had been rumoured for a number of months.

The new iteration of the successful console comes in Charcoal Black and Classic White, in 250GB and 500GB versions.

The new version of the console is approximately 20 percent smaller and 25 percent lighter when compared to the current PS3 model. The design features a minor gloss near the edges and a ridged top panel.

The console also features a sliding door panel to top-load the discs, as opposed to the slot-loading of the current models.

In North America, the 250GB console will be available on 25 September and be priced at $269.99. It will come as part of a “limited edition” bundle that includes the “game of the year” edition of Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception and a credit for $30 worth of content for the game Dust 514.

The 500GB version will be available on 30 October for $299.99, and will also feature a limited bundle, coming packed with a copy of Assassin’s Creed 3.

In PAL territories (that’s us), the 500GB will launch as a bundle with FIFA 13 for around €299.99, with a wallet-friendly 12GB version priced around €229.99 standalone.

Owners of the 12GB model will be able to connect a 3.5-inch SATA internal hard drive with use of an official Mounting Bracket, or opt for purchase of an official PlayStation 250GB internal HDD.
