Microsoft is allegedly planning to extend its incoming Xbox LIVE music subscription service to several new territories, including South Africa, according to a report over on TechCentral.
Originally announced at E3 in June, the Xbox Music service is a rebranding of the existing (but now mostly discontinued) Zune service, and is scheduled to launch on 26 October alongside the Windows 8 release. The service will be supported not only on Xbox 360 consoles, but also Windows PCs, tablets, and smartphones, with expansion to iOS and Android devices later.
Over on The Next Web, the claim is lent further credence with reports that Microsoft is rolling out the Zune service in countries like Brazil and Germany, where it was previously unavailable – suggesting that the company could be preparing to upgrade the service to Xbox Music in these places later this month (or not).
We’ve contacted Microsoft SA for comment, but for the moment, file this one under “MAAAAAAYBE”. Despite introducing official local support for Xbox LIVE more than a year ago already, Microsoft hasn’t exactly been in a hurry to add services and content available in the US and Europe.
