What is the most played game in the world?

League of Legends developer Riot Games has released another of their infographics, this one making a convincing case for League of Legends being the most played video game in the world.

The claim comes on the back of the fact that LoL boasts more hours played per month than any other game. To put this in perspective, the Halo series has been played 2 billion hours since it began in 2004 – League of Legends, on the other hand, gets played over a billion hours every single month.

Riot has more impressive stats as well – the Top 100 games on Steam attracted 650,000 concurrent users on the 10th of May – on an average day in July League of Legends had 3 million concurrent users blaming each other for their deaths.

Amusingly, Riot compares its game’s social media presence to that of Psy’s Gangnam Style – with 4.1 million Facebook “likes” to 1.4 million.

The popularity of the trinity of the MOBA titles – LoL, DotA 2 and Heroes of Newerth – leaves you wondering how much steam the genre actually has. Riot’s offering is head and shoulders above the rest, most likely due to the simple fact that it got there first.
