Project Eternity Kickstarter ends with plenty in the piggybank

17 October 2012

Despite falling juuuuuust short of their final $4 million stretch goal, Obsidian’s Project Eternity Kickstarter campaign closed up last night with a totally respectable $3,986,929 pledged by 73,986 backers. This also makes it officially the biggest ever Kickstarter gaming campaign, beating out previous record-holder Double Fine’s  Adventure campaign, which racked-up $3,335,265.

Additional money donated through PayPal, adding up to some $150,000 or so, puts Obsidian’s funds over the $4 million mark, so the studio’s (intriguingly vague) promise to “enhance the whole game” will presumably be kept.

Stretch goals that were previously met include the adding of extra playable races, classes, companions, factions, regions, item crafting, and a “mega (mega mega mega) dungeon (dungeon, dungeon, dungeon)“.

Mac and Linux versions of the game will also be made thanks to the stretch goals being reached.

The game is tentatively scheduled for launch in April 2014, but with almost $3 million more than Obsidian had originally expected, the extra cash may well be invested in making a much bigger game that could extend development time. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
