The American Entertainment Software Ratings Board – that’s the people responsible for deciding who gets to play what so parents don’t have to – have launched a free online ratings service to speed up the process of rating games for release, so everybody can go ahead and ignore the labels that much more quickly.
The ESRB’s new Digital Rating Service will use an online questionnaire, presumably quizzing for things like nudity and swearing and other things that may corrupt innocent children who have never watched reality TV, to evaluate content for age-appropriateness as well as “interactive elements, including the sharing of personal information or physical location and exposure to unfiltered user-generated content”.
The service will initially be available for rating content for digital distribution platforms, including the Xbox LIVE Arcade, PlayStation Network, and Windows 8. Not that it’s going to make much difference locally, where the South African Film and Publications Board still insists on holding everything up anyway.
