Online gaming may be affected by SAT-3 maintenance this weekend

26 October 2012

Telkom announced in a press release today (26 October 2012) that there will be further planned maintenance on its SAT-3 undersea cable this weekend (27 October 2012).

The planned maintenance will begin at 02:00 on Saturday morning and will be completed by 08:00 the same day at the latest, Telkom said.

This might cause increased latency between 06:00 and 08:00, Telkom warned, due to the normal high levels of traffic during this time period.

However, Telkom said that it is confident that its network’s self-healing capabilities and automatic traffic re-routing ability will keep any impact to a minimum.

South Africa’s fixed-line telecommunications incumbent also said that the planned maintenance work on 19 October was successfully completed without any downtime.

According to Telkom, customers have not experienced any downtime during the maintenance period. This is because of the various contingency plans they undertook to minimise any impact to its international connectivity, Telkom said.
