Matchmaking in FPS games, particularly in Call of Duty games, is kind of a sensitive subject. When Modern Warfare 2 did away with dedicated servers in favour of a matchmaking system, PC gamers were less than happy.
And, to be fair, it didn’t work as well as it should have, issues with lag and game delays were common. The problem was that players were grouped together based on location in order to get a group with similar connection speeds, which unfortunately wasn’t always the case.
Treyarch Design Director David Vonderharr has revealed via Twitter that Black Ops 2 attempts to rectify this issue by matching players based purely on ping and latency – location isn’t even taken into account.
Treyarch have also confirmed dedicated PC hosting, to at least soothe some of the PC gamer rage. The new system should result in better connections and less drop-outs, but “should” is the operative word there.
