Are you a Linux user? Have you ever wanted to install Steam and play something that isn’t an open-sourced port of Doom? Your dreams have come true. Valve is prepping to launch the Steam for Linux beta, and is currently accepting applications.
There are apparently only 1,000 spaces on the backstage guest list, and Valve is looking specifically for “experienced Linux users”, which may or may not include a high superiority and smugness quotient. I’m just kidding, but you’d better be able to compile your own kernel from source. Maybe.
Until now, Linux users have had to use Wine‘s compatibility layer to run the Windows version of Steam, which obviously isn’t quite ideal. Steam for Linux will be more or less exactly the same as it is on PC and Mac, and includes the Steam shop.
