World of Warcraft gamer wins US state senate election

World of Warcraft Orc Rogue

Maine Democratic state senate candidate Colleen Lachowicz has won the state’s election, despite attempts by the opposition Republican Party to tarnish her reputation by revealing that – gasp! – she plays World of Warcraft.

“Colleen Lachowicz spends hundreds of hours playing in her online world Azeroth, as an Orc Assassination Rogue named Santiaga,” read a lurid flyer sent to voters in the district, and funded by the local Republican Party. Apparently this is, like, a big deal or something in a country where millions of voting adults play video games too.

Hilariously, the totally shocking scandal didn’t quite work out as intended, and instead, supporters from around the world raised $6300 towards Lochowicz’s election campaign. Oh snap.

Last week, Lachowicz beat out Republican incumbent Thomas Martin to represent Maine’s 25th Senate district, winning 52.8 percent of the votes. Clearly Martin underestimated the Guild Wars 2 counter-vote – maybe next time, huh?
