People who like to help themselves to stuff for free and claim it doesn’t matter because they weren’t going to buy it anyway (etc.) are back in the news today – developer Hunted Cow has had to shut down Battle Dungeon for iOS after a pirated copy of the game turned up on the torrents, resulting in a massive subsequent server overload by non-paying players.
The game lasted less a week.
In a notice on the game’s website, the developer announced quite simply that “unfortunately we have taken Battle Dungeon down for the forseeable future”, citing “high levels of server load created by large numbers of pirated copies of the game”.
Speaking with PocketTactics, Hunted Cow boss Andrew Mullholland explained the situation further:
“After a pirated version of the .ipa surfaced on the net, we saw around ten times the amount of people joining the game compared to the amount of sales. A multiplayer game like Battle Dungeon requires servers to host matches – servers that Hunted Cow has to pay to maintain. If they were all legitimate sales, it would have given us the resources to work on it further, however the way it was going it just wasn’t viable.”
Hunted Cow is now offering legit customers a full refund for both the game and any additional in-app purchases made. That’s months of work down the toilet because, you know, “sharing is caring, lol”.
Lol, dicks.
