Sniper Elite multiplayer servers shut down behind dev’s back

The multiplayer servers for Rebellion’s sharp-shooting action game, Sniper Elite, have been shut down, and the developers have apologised to fans.

The servers were shut down by Glu, the third-party service that Rebellion had maintaining them.

“A few weeks ago, the online multiplayer servers for Sniper Elite were suddenly switched off by Glu, the third-party service we had been paying to maintain them,” said Rebellion senior producer at Steve Hart in a statement to the community.

“For the past seven years we have run these servers at a cost to ourselves so that fans of Sniper Elite could continue to play online for free. This decision by Glu was not taken in consultation with us and was beyond our control.”

Rebellion is in talks with Glu to get the servers back online, although the developer says that it will be at a huge cost to the company, and Rebellion would have to redevelop aspects of the game if they were to move Sniper Elite to a new provider.

Players are also saying that servers for the games Hidden and Dangerous 2, Wings of War, SWAT 4, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Battlefront and Flight Simulator X have also been shut down.
