On 7 and 8 December 2012, Frag LAN had their first ever online PC gaming event at Edgewood College in Durban. “The event could only happen thanks to the University of KZN and the University’s ability to supply enough bandwidth for the event and the demands of the different games being played,” said a spokesperson for Frag LAN.
By providing an internet connection, Frag enabled the 300-person LAN to play the popular Dota 2, a game which requires a permanent internet connection and online matchmaking services via Steam. “The ability to host such a LAN is a huge achievement as it has never been done before on such a scale,” said Frag LAN.
The LAN started at 10H00 on Friday morning and went through the night until Sunday morning at 9H00. Organisers say that the event ran smoothly, with no power outages and gamers using the internet connectivity without any problems experienced.
As the LAN drew to a close, Frag said that gamers refused to willingly leave, and the organisers were forced to pull the power. Only once the power had been switched off, did the gamers start packing and depart.
“The organisers from ‘Frag’ had successfully ensured that everyone had an absolutely enjoyable experience. Loads of fun was had, and prizes for the best gamers and various fun competitions were awarded during the event to further increase the satisfaction of all those present,” said Frag.
“A huge thanks has to go to firstly the University of KZN for the internet, I-StudentSA for prize sponsorship, Mass Discounter Games Stores for the Cash prizes and COREX South Africa for their prize sponsorship. Without the help of the sponsors the LAN would not have been possible.”
The next Frag LAN takes place on Friday, 25 January 2013. For more details, visit the Frag LAN website
