Sony ceases PS2 shipments in Japan

One of the greatest consoles ever made, Sony’s Playstation 2, is slowly becoming extinct in Japan.

Sony has ceased shipments of the PS2 in Japan – you can still buy one off the shelf, but once the current stock is gone, that’s it for the aging console.

The PS2 was first released in Japan more than 12 years ago in March 2000, and as of last week it has sold 21 million units in the country. Globally that figure is a staggering 153.6 million units since the beginning of 2012.

As for the rest of the world, there’s been no official statement on shipping stopping to other regions, although it’s likely safe to say that they won’t be too far behind.

While the PS2 may be long forgotten by many, it truly is the end of an era.
