Telkom 20Mbps, 40Mbps VDSL pricing, launch details

Telkom Wholesale is planning to launch their DSL Up to 20Mbps and DSL Up to 40Mbps on 4 March 2013, with retail prices emerging of around R480 for a 20Mbps connection and R650 for a 40Mbps service.

Telkom said in communication to their resellers that their 20Mbps and 40Mbps VDSL trial – which will end on 31 January 2013 – showed broadband speeds of “exceptional quality”.

The high speed DSL services will only be available in areas where Telkom has upgraded its network to Multi Services Access Nodes (MSANs), which can support the higher speeds.

Telkom said that its 20Mbps and 40Mbps DSL footprint will be expanded with continued network upgrades in areas where it makes sense.

Consumers and businesses looking to buy Telkom’s new products will need a VDSL modem which is backwards compatible with ADSL to ensure optimal performance.

First 20Mbps and 40Mbps VDSL prices emerge

Cybersmart is the first Internet Service Provider (ISP) to release prices for the new 20Mbps and 40Mbps DSL services.

These prices are very close to Telkom’s wholesale rate for VDSL access only, and therefore gives a good indication of what consumers can expect from other ISPs.

  • 20Mbps access with 5GB of data – R479
  • 40Mbps access with 5GB of data – R649

An installation charge of R424 will be charged where a Telkom technician is dispatched on a self-install provisioning incident.

Lol. 40mbps with 5gb cap. That’s like having a Ferrari body with the engine from a 1.1 Uno.

  • More like a Ferrari with only 1l of Petrol

  • not cool on the data caps at all, Bastards!!!

  • CeeZedCee

Can you at least use your own data account?

  • UltimateNinjaPandaDudeGuy

Well lets hope other ISPs get to resell VDSL like they do with ADSL and then we will see how the caps look.

  • Vorastra

5GB or not, I’m very surprised by the price.

  • The cap is there to avoid bandwidth abuse.

  • Except that a 5GB cap is ridiculous at that speed. 5GB is suitable for those few who just use their connection for random browsing and e-mails, and they’re hardly those who need 20Mpbs+.

They don’t have to go uncapped, but at the very least they should be providing higher capped packages to use with those accounts.

  • I think they are just doing it to test the waters, pretty sure ISPs will have uncapped options in the future, but doubt anytime soon, hence handling all the traffic with 40mbps line users is just…a lot to take it.

Any indication on which area’s will receive such speeds? I’ll be happy with just an 8-10mb line.
