Star Trek director fulfils cancer sufferer’s movie preview wish

7 January 2013

Star Trek director J.J. Abrams has answered a plea from a cancer patient and die-hard Trekkie.

Daniel, a New Yorker, was diagnosed with leukaemia and other unrelated cancer problems, and one of his desires has been to see the upcoming Star Trek movie, Into Darkness, but he was unsure whether he’d ever get to see the film.

Daniel’s friend hit Reddit and asked for help from anyone who could let Daniel see the 10 minute preview that is supposed to play ahead of The Hobbit in US theatres.

After J.J. Abrams heard of the cry for help, the director went the extra mile, pulled some strings, and organised for Daniel to not only watch the preview, but the movie in its entirety – months ahead of its release.

Daniel’s friend reported back on Reddit after the screening, and posted that Daniel’s wife said: “We saw it, and we enjoyed it immensely as a film and as a gesture.”

Daniel’s wife also said that Daniel doesn’t want to be another “inspiring cancer story”, and would rather the gesture be a “heartfelt message of giving.”
