Klei surprised by Mark of the Ninja on Steam in SA

9 January 2013

Mark of the Ninja PC has sneakily appeared on the SA Steam store page, and true to stealth form, this even came as a bit of a surprise to developer Klei Entertainment.

Having launched for PC in other parts of the globe on 16 October 2012, the game was absent due to a hold-up at South Africa’s Film and Publications Board (FPB), the regulatory body that must approve all games for sale in South Africa, digital or physical. This was according to Klei.

Following a 3 January article lamenting its absence, there was a bit of twitter activity from the FPB, who contacted Klei Entertainment following up on the situation.

Speaking about the sudden listing of the game on Steam, Klei community manager Corey Rollins said: “Just found out today, from a fan on Twitter. We never actually heard anything from FPB outside of that one employee who reached out on Twitter.”

Discussing the delay in rating, Rollins said “It’s simply part of the process of shipping a game. Whether you’re an independent developer or a large AAA publisher, it’s always going to be unfortunate when delays do occur.” On the topic of piracy due to the unavailability of the game, Rollins said that it is not a measurable problem.

“Everyone has been really understanding of the situation, so big thanks to those who were patiently waiting,” said Rollins.

Mark of the Ninja for PC has been rated at 91 and 93.33 on Metacritic and Gamerankings respectively.

Besides looking gorgeous with its hand-drawn visuals, the 2D platformer also features awesome gameplay, requiring players to sneak and slash their way through environments, taking out guards and solving puzzles along the way.

Players also have to be extra careful as the game features a line-of-sight mechanic where, if enemies can’t see you, you can’t see them.

Critics praised the game extensively, winning many editor’s choice awards across the gaming media.

This is actually the first time I heard of something taking long to get approved by the FPB. Usually games are available on release day so I wonder if the guys at the FPB got a bit addicted to playing this and never got around to actually approving it!
