The phenomenon that is Kickstarter emerged as a crowdfunding source for prospective projects, and has now turned into a fully-fledged platform for launching everything from games, movies, and music projects to a banana piano and other crazy inventions.
To wrap up the events of 2012, Kickstarter put together a bunch of facts and stats regarding what happened on the dream-building website.
In terms of gaming, its been an incredibly successful year on Kickstarter. Video games had the most money pledged out of any category, ranking up US$83 million throughout the year.
The gaming category had 561,574 backers, who pledged towards 2,796 projects.
One of the stand-out Kickstarter performances was Tim Schafer’s Double Fine Adventure.
Shafer’s project aimed to score $400,000 in funding, and ended up with a little more – over $3.3 million.
Some other interesting numbers:
- Over 2.2 million people pledged a total of $319,786,629 and funded 18,109 projects in 2012.
- 90% of the countries of the world backed Kickstarter campaigns.
- Music had the most funded projects with 5,067 successful campaigns.
- 17 projects raised more than $1 million in 2012.
