Telkom has done away with a hard-cap on its capped ADSL accounts, and is introducing a soft-cap, effective from 1 February 2013. A spokesperson for Telkom has updated MyGaming on how this will affect gaming-specific Internet usage situations.
According to Telkom:
- When a customer reaches the soft-cap, gaming protocols will be shaped and throttled;
- There will be no difference in the shaping of gaming protocols to SA servers versus international servers;
- Telkom’s SAIX gaming services will not be receiving any special shaping policy;
- Soft-capped users will be able to download files from local and international gaming digital distribution services, but the speeds will be throttled.
Telkom’s spokesperson said that “The soft-cap feature was not designed for gaming. We are committed to providing a satisfying gaming experience and supporting local gaming communities, and we are working on a number of initiatives to provide a better experience in future.”
Telkom’s new soft-cap policy
Telkom will be upgrading its Internet network from 1 February 2013, and this change will mean that capped users will now get access to all websites even after they reach their monthly usage limit.
“This effectively means customers reaching their internet cap will no longer be limited to local data. They will now also be able to access international sites,” Telkom explained.
“Instead of hitting a cap, customers will now merely have their speed slowed down and some of their international activity shaped.”
Telkom added that all data consumed on the soft cap will be free – a move away from the current system where customers may be charged for over-usage.
“Day to day activities such as email, banking and browsing will be given priority, whilst lower priority will be given to high-usage applications such as file sharing and streaming services,” Telkom said.
Prices remain the same for the Do (consumer) and TBiz (business) capped bundles.
