Gearbox turned down Call of Duty project

15 January 2013

Gearbox Software, known for developing some of the best first-person shooters around (barring Mr. Nukem’s return), were offered the chance to make a Call of Duty game, but turned it down.

Studio president Randy Pitchford revealed that Gearbox declined the offer from Activision, which would’ve seen the developers create the next Call of Duty game.

“I didn’t know what there was to aim for there,” said Pitchford.

The studio boss said that Gearbox would only take on an existing franchise if there is some new approach or perspective to it, and they just didn’t see that with the colossal-selling man-shooter that is Call of Duty.

“I think to deliver the Call of Duty that people want you have to play by the rules of the series. You have to do what is expected of a Call of Duty. So I see no real challenge for us. It wouldn’t strengthen our reputation as a studio, and it wouldn’t be really motivating for our team.”

Gearbox’s current projects include Aliens: Colonial Marines, which is scheduled for a 12 February 2013 release.
