SA gamers’ habits reveal industry growth

An Accenture research report has revealed some interesting facts regarding gaming habits.

The report, “It’s Anyone’s Game in the Consumer Electronics Playing Field”, explores how over 11,000 consumers in 11 countries (including South Africa) purchase and embrace multi-function devices, and what they’re used for, mentioning gaming as one of the activities.

In terms of purchasing a new device in 2013, 7% of the demographic plan on buying a gaming console within the next year.

As for what device is used for what, 81% of the interviewees use PCs for gaming, 40% use their phones for gaming, 18% use a tablet, and 11% use TVs (presumably Smart TV game features).

When asked about what online services consumers use, the results show that 41% of the interviewees are active with online gaming. A 4% increase from 2011 to 2012.

In a typical week, 42% said that they engage with playing games, while 40% said that they connect with people by playing games on social networking sites.

The groups were also asked if they had bought a gaming console or PC in the last 12 months, with 6% having purchased a gaming console, and 29% buying a new PC.

South African consumers were said to have spent an average of $940 over the past 12 months on electronics, with plans of spending $1,164 in the next 12 months.
