Sega admits to misleading Aliens: Colonial Marines demo

4 April 2013

Sega has released a response to the fiasco that was created by the final retail version of Aliens: Colonial Marines, as it was found to be very different from the original demo footage.

Sega has acknowledged that the demo presented by Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford at E3 2012 was in fact very different to the game that arrived on store shelves; and further has said to add a disclaimer to all trailers of the game.

The ASA was contacted and replied with the following:

“We contacted Sega Europe to discuss this issue. They explained that their online trailers used demo footage, created using the in-game engine. Sega Europe understood the objections raised about the quality of the game in relation to the trailers, but explained that they weren’t aware of these issues when the trailers were produced, in some cases several months before release.”

“Sega Europe acknowledged your objection that the trailers did not accurately reflect the final content of the game. They agreed to add a disclaimer, both on their website and in all relevant YouTube videos, which explains that the trailers depict footage of the demo versions of the game. The disclaimer will be visible when each online trailer is played.”

The ASA added that the newly added disclaimer on the trailers will be “unlikely to mislead” gamers this time around.

Well gee. Who would have thought they’d have to admit this. Pfff. Besides, if I was a consumer and I saw the demo footage labeled as “demo footage” I would think “Awesome! So the game’s graphics must be even better since the demo footage must be a work in progress”

The truth of the matter is that it never should have happened in the first place.

This is the very reason I refuse to purchase anything Day1 or to pre-order. End of story.
