GaymerX responds to Westboro Baptist Church criticisms

18 April 2013

The organisers of GaymerX (formally Gamercon) have hit back against a video which emerged from the Westboro Baptist Church, which criticised the relevance and purpose of the event.

The Westboro Baptist Church’s video was relatively ridiculous, asking some sarcastic questions regarding the sexuality of a number of video game characters.

GaymerX decided to answer those questions, and also encourage invited everyone to join in on the event, which is to take place on 3-4 August 2013 in San Francisco.

Check out the video below:

An abridged version of the Westboro Baptist Church Wikipedia entry:

The Westboro Baptist Church is an American independent church known for its extreme ideologies, especially those against gay people. The church is widely described as a hate group and is monitored as such.

The church has been actively involved in actions against gay people since at least 1991. In addition to conducting anti-gay protests at military funerals, the organization pickets other celebrity funerals and public events that are likely to get it media attention. Protests have also been held against Jews and some protests have included WBC members stomping on the American flag.

The WBC is not affiliated with any Baptist denomination, including the two largest Baptist denominations, the Baptist World Alliance or the Southern Baptist Convention, both of which have denounced the WBC over the years. The church describes itself as following Primitive Baptist and Calvinist principles.

In giving the church attention, through doing things such as writing articles and making documentaries, the members get impression that people are interested in them, and what they do. It may even give them the impression that they have supporters. It’d be really sad if that kind of stuff contributes in some way – fueling their actions. Awareness has been achieved. I think people should just ignore them unless they’re taking action against or criticizing them.
