Google is reportedly developing a console in a push to stretch the company’s hardware reach beyond smartphones and tablets.

The new comes from “people familiar with the matter”, according to Wall Street Journal, who say that the game console will benefit from the popularity of Android-powered gaming, which has grown substantially on mobile platforms.

The reason behind the console is also said to be a response to Apple, who Google suspects will release a console as part of its next Apple TV product release.

If Google is to release a console, it wouldn’t be the only Android console on the market, as the pint-sized Ouya was recently released.
